Instead of beginning with a worksheet, textbook chapter, or predetermined answer, a Fredyn Mission begins with something worth figuring out.
Students investigate, ask better questions, work with evidence, make connections across disciplines, and apply what they discover.
Sometimes that means entering a lab.
Sometimes it means going into the field.
Sometimes it means designing, building, mapping, interviewing, testing, measuring, analyzing, or using emerging technology.
The subject may change.

A Fredyn Mission can move learning beyond simulation.
Students have participated in authentic field and research experiences, including shark research in which they helped collect scientific information while learning why these animals matter to ocean ecosystems.

Who is Fredyn for?

Fredyn is designed for curious young people who want more than passive learning.
Some arrive with deep interests.

Some simply light up when they encounter a question they genuinely want to solve.
Fredyn does not require a child to carry a particular label in order to be curious.
Questions Parents Ask
What exactly is a think tank for kids?
Think tanks investigate questions, gather information, analyze evidence, connect expertise, and develop ideas. Fredyn adapts that spirit for young people. Students participate in Missions built around meaningful questions and challenges rather than simply moving through a predetermined list of classroom activities.
Is Fredyn a school or tutoring program?
Fredyn centers on mission-based learning experiences rather than a traditional full-day school program. Unlike conventional tutoring, a Fredyn Mission begins with a question, challenge, investigation, or real-world application.
Does my child need to be gifted?
No. Fredyn is particularly appealing to highly curious children, advanced learners, unconventional thinkers, and students who want deeper intellectual challenge, but a formal gifted designation is not required unless a specific program states otherwise.
What ages can participate?
Age and readiness requirements vary by Mission. Some Missions require specific minimum ages because of equipment, safety, expert-partner rules, or the complexity of the work. Fredyn considers readiness—not chronological age alone—where appropriate.
Can Step Up scholarship funds be used?
Eligible Fredyn offerings may be available through Step Up/EMA. Families should select the appropriate payment pathway during registration and follow the instructions provided after registration.
Where do Fredyn Missions take place?
Locations vary. Missions may take place at Fredyn partner locations, university or research settings, field sites, community locations, indoor instructional spaces, or other sites appropriate to the investigation. The individual Mission Page will state the location and parent-attendance requirements.
